Are gas engineers actually using AI?

Turns out, plenty of engineers, business owners, and admin already are. Nearly 6 in 10 use AI at least now and then, and around a third ask AI something most weeks. It’s no longer a “not for me” thing for the trade, and has some legitimate use cases.

Are gas engineers using AI?

Use AI (30% most weeks, 27% now & then) Don’t use it (38% never, 5% tried & stopped)

Base: 410 respondents who answered. GES user & subscriber survey, 2026.

What are they using it for?

With the recent release of our Boiler AI Assist feature, it’s no surprise that the most common usage of AI is looking up boiler info and fault codes. It’s a fast and low-risk way to get answers, so makes a lot of sense (and saves Googling for the right manual while on-site).

As one engineer put it:

“I don’t want it to take jobs off me. I want it to inform me so I can do the jobs better.”

After that comes the paperwork jobs. Quotes and invoices, customer messages, and a bit of social media.

Following this response, we’re sure our new AI quoting and invoicing feature will land well among those who never seem to find time in the day to sit down and get paperwork done. AI is ideal for getting that initial first draft sorted before you apply any final changes and check over the prices.

AI can’t take your job, but can be used to help you do it better

Those in heating and plumbing are in no danger of having their work replaced by AI. After all, you need to actually be on-site to get the job done and admin/paperwork still needs to be checked.

But that leaves a lot of room for AI to help. We asked what single job you’d give to AI if you could, and the answer showed that the admin and the money side are parts of the job many would rather hand off.

Sole traders especially often find themselves in the position of being unable to hire admin help, but also completely drained by the constant onslaught of quotes, customer calls, invoices, payments to chase, and so on. Meanwhile, if admin staff can use AI to save time on the repetitive tasks, they’ll have more time to spend on work that benefits the customer (proactive calls, less hectic work days, and the chance to go the extra mile).

While AI can help with the above, it isn’t a complete replacement. As one responder correctly noted:

“Don’t think it could take a job off you. AI is a great tool to help save time — letter writing and quote building is the number one at the moment.”

A couple of interesting ideas cropped up, too: Smart scheduling that groups nearby jobs to cut your driving, and snapping a photo of a part to identify and source it.

At GES, we’re actively building a set of AI features to solve these frustrations and enhance existing features like quote and invoice creation, scheduling, and more. On the horizon is also an AI receptionist that will take calls when you can’t, record information for the customer, and even book a job for them.

Do engineers trust it yet?

While seven in ten see real potential in AI for the trade, about one in eight still don’t trust it.

Even today, AI is by no means perfect. It makes mistakes, can misinterpret what you want, and shouldn’t be left unchecked. But this is exactly why we’re committed to taking AI and making it something genuinely useful for those in heating & plumbing.

One example is Boiler AI Assist adding a source and link to the correct page in the manual for you to quickly verify and check the answer. Without that, you wouldn’t be able to trust it 100% (which is crucial).

The end goal is to amplify the work you can do, not replace it, and we’re always improving these features.
